WEEK 10 + 11: DONE, DONE DONE AND DONE!

For my last post I am including both week 10 and 11 because I've completed the last 2 parts of my final assignment in these weeks, the collage and the movie,

After finally being able to get all my edited footage for my movie onto my laptop I was able to finish it. I used Windows Movie Maker to do the final editing, which was to add the audio (Elastic Heart by Sia) and edit the video to make it greyscale, after that I added credits and  it was finally done! I decided to call the movie 'Elastic' because of how the song relates to the struggles that I've faced with body issues and drinking and like an elastic band, no matter how far I am stretched in life, I am able to come back to myself and be happy with who I am.

Here are a few snapshots that were taken during the filming.

I also got my Pop Art Comic collage completed as well. I really love how this turned out, its bright and colourful and I loved changing around the colours for each of the images and each image stands out in its own way. After getting the drawings from the photographs, I uploaded them to Illustrator so I could then trace them and add colour to them. I had to used Photoshop a little to get the trace lines right and then also to combine the 3 finalized images into a collage.

Here's some pictures of the drawings and the final images.

Since I've finished off all the artworks, I've just been putting together a PowerPoint presentation for the presentation of all my works to the class.

This semester has gone so quickly and I have thoroughly enjoyed this class and feel like I have learnt a lot about the creation of digital art and will be able to use this in the future.

Thanks for tuning in!

For the last time!

WEEK 9: Feeling Fine

Only 3 weeks left!
This week I finished my single digital drawing of myself as a pin up.
I drew a sketch based off the photograph, went over the sketch with fine liner to make the lines bolder so they stand out and are easier to trace over in Illustrator. I then took a picture of it to upload to my laptop so I could start working on it in Illustrator. I traced over the drawing then added colour and a shadow effect, then a background and border to finish it off.
Here's some pictures of the process.

I am really please with how it this artwork turned out and I really enjoyed the whole process of putting it together.

This week I started to put together and edit my movie on Final Cut Pro, so far the editing hasn't been a problem but saving my work to continue working on it on my laptop has, Hopefully I can work around it and get my movie finished in time! I also have been working on the pop art comic pictures and will hopefully have them completed soon as well.

Next week will be my last blog post, so till then!

Peace!

WEEK Eight! Pop Art is Great!

This week I organised the three photographs that I'm using for the collage component of my folio. I took many photos of myself pulling poses that are common in Pop art comics, I looked through many pictures of Pop art comics to help with this and here are some of my favourites that helped to inspire the photos I took and the final collage images.

Here are some of the photographs I took for the collage.

I've narrowed it down to three photographs and will begin tracing and drawing them this week so they can be scan and draw using illustrator, like my single digital drawing of me as a pin up. I'm hoping to make this collage look like a comic strip and I'm decided whether I want to use speech bubbles or not in the final drawing, I'll play around with that and see what looks best when I come to it.

Until next time!

WEEK 7: Lipstick Everywhere

This week I began writing out a storyboard for my movie and then finalizing what I want to do in my movie. After that I got a friend of mine to assist with the filming. The filming process was quick and went smoothly and I was really happy with all the footage and was excited to start putting together my movie. My friend also helped with the photography component of the assignment which was
following the theme of lipstick and how I tend to get it everywhere, as mentioned in my proposal. The three photographs that were taken were one of my mouth smiling and lipstick on my teeth, one of a lipstick kiss print on a napkin and finally a lipstick print on a glass of wine.

After I had my photographs, I began editing them on Photoshop. I firstly cropped them to a size I was happy with and then made all the photographs greyscale, while leaving the lipstick still coloured so it stands out against the black and white.
Here is one of my final photographs.

I have all of my photography component completed now and am very happy with the results.
I'm starting on editing my movie and also my collage component soon,

Peace!

Week Six: Pin up Model

This week I began working on my single digital artwork which is going  to be the pin up image of myself. I looked up some images of pin up artworks and focused on things such as the clothing, make up and poses to get an idea on how to incorporate them into my own artwork.
Here are some examples of Pin ups.

After that I set up a little photo shoot and got my boyfriend to help with taking some photos of myself as a pin up. The photos turned out great and I was really happy with a lot of the photos that were taken, the only problem with that is I had to many choices and it took me a while to narrow it down to just one image to use for my final digital drawing,
Here are my 3 favourite photos.

The last photo was the one I decided to use for my single digital artwork. I printed off a few of the images and then drew them so I can then scan them onto the computer to begin working on them on illustrator or Photoshop.

Next week I am planning on taking my photos for the photography component of the assessment.

Till next time!

Introduction to Digital Art: Proposal

For my Introduction to Digital Art final folio artworks I am focusing on the theme of ‘Is This Me? A Self Portrait’.

Through these artworks and this theme I am hoping to express different aspects of my life, my personality, things that are important to me and little quirks and details about me.
I will start with the photography component of the final assessment. I love make up and it’s a big part of who I am as a person, I use it as a way of expression and I tend to do unique things with my make up and try different things. I never leave the house without it and 90% of the time I have lipstick on, I absolutely love lipstick and what it can do to the lips, I feel like it draws people’s attention to my lips and in doing so makes people pay more attention to what I say.  One of the down sides to lipstick that I deal with every day is lipstick getting left over everything, such as my teeth, glasses, my food, my boyfriend’s face and his lips, it just kind of a funny little thing that happens to me so how I’m using lipstick as the main focus of my photographs is by taking photographs of things that I've left my infamous lipstick mark on. I’m going to edit the photographs into black and white and then have the lipstick print in colour, to make it really stand out.

The digital artwork and the collage component of the assessment will be influenced by the style of Pin up, pop art comics and comic books. I've always loved both of those style of art so I’m planning on turning myself into a comic for the collage and then for the single digital artwork, creating a digital drawing of myself as a pin up. I have always been fascinated by pin up and since I hit the age of 16 I've wanted to be a pin up model, I love expressing my sensual and sexy side, and I see pin up as a way for woman to express that and  I feel like it has a big influence on how I dress and how I do my make up. That's why I want to use that style and want to become a pin up in my artwork, and I plan on incorporating elements of myself and things I love in this image.
For the collage I am planning on doing a comic strip of pop art comic images of myself in various poses and that relate to an aspect of myself. Roy Lichtenstein is a pop art artists that has influenced my choice of pop art in my assessment, some examples of his artworks that stand out to me are

Hopeless (1963), Oil and acrylic paint on canvas.

Crying Girl (1964), Porcelain enamel on steel.

Crak! (1963) Lithograph using Ben-Day dots and text balloon.

I am influenced by these artworks because of the drama of them, I am a very dramatic person and my emotions are always on my sleeve and I feel pop art always has that sense of over dramatizing a situation and the objects in the artworks are always overly emotional, whether it be happy, in love, sad , angry or heartbroken, etc, they express it in a way that stands out, which is usually how I feel emotions, right on the surface.
How I am planning to do both the pin up artwork and the collage artwork is by first take pictures of myself in the different poses, then draw the images and scan them onto the computer and the using Illustrator trace the drawings and then colour them in and add the backgrounds. For the collage I will be putting those images into a comic strip to finish it off.

The video component of the assessment will focus on the darker side of myself and the struggles I have dealt with and still deal with sometimes in life. Also I will be focusing on how I have overcome some of these struggles and how they have helped me to grow and become stronger as a person. I want to use the song “Elastic Heart” by Sia as the song for my video because I feel it relates to myself and my struggles with love and relationships and also self-acceptance. I will not be using colour in my movie so it will contrast from my other works, In the video I am planning on using stop motion, fast forwarding and reversing as some of the techniques. I want my video to feel dream like, like its the scary place that my mind can sometimes be.

WEEK FOUR! COLOURING IN!

WEEK FOUR

In today's class of Introduction to Digital Art we learnt how to trace scanned images using Adobe Illustrator.

We got a scanned image of a sleeping man that had fallen out of bed with his teddy bear, we then had to copy it into illustrator, go to the window tab and select image trace, after that we were able to change the presets of the trace until we were happy with it.
Then we selected the expand button, so we can edit any lines we needed to manually.
Next we moved onto coloring with the live paint tool, which we used last week.

This is how my image turned out...
I really love that pattern on his pajamas, it speaks to me on a spiritual level.

After we did that we played around with the same image using layers, transparency and the paint brush tool to manually paint the image. That was a bit more difficult and staying inside the lines was tricky.

After that I had a go at using the tracing tool with some photos of me, the lines didn't turn out bold so it wouldn't be an ideal way to do my pop art comic artworks, so instead I'm going to draw out the photos of me and then scan them to the computer and then trace the scanned drawings and colour them in Illustrator, then add any effects I may need to create the pop art comic images.

Tune in next week were we use Photoshop.

Peace!

WEEK 3: The Leaves Are All Falling

Welcome to Week Three of Introduction to Digital Art!

In today's class our lecture was unfortunately cancelled.
So instead of the lecture I did some searching for examples and inspirations for my artworks.

I've always been fascinated with pop art comics and comic books, so for my collage piece I'm planning on have various images of myself as pop art comics, each image will have a different depiction of myself. I'm excited to start working on this piece and I hope it turns out as well as I can imagine it in my head. Fingers crossed it does!

Here are some examples!

In the tutorial today we went over a some of the techniques in Adobe Illustrator we learnt last week to refresh everything and surprisingly I remembered a lot of it. We then did some work with colouring and using different effects such as glow.

I then had a go at tracing another image of a woman's face, it was a bit more difficult than the ones we started with in week 2 but I think I did a good job for my first go at something more complex.

Next week I am hoping to start on my digital drawings for my collage.

Till next week!

Peace! xx

Week TWO: Introduction to Digital Art

This week in Introduction to Digital Art we looked at some amazing examples of Digital Art, some by famous digital artist and some by past VU students.

It really inspired me with some new ideas for my assignments and I think I've decided to focus my artworks around the topic of Self Portrait, and I've been brainstorming ideas and been drawing on things I see in my everyday life to put towards them.

In today's tutorial we had our first try at using the program Adobe Illustrator. It was my first time ever using that program, however I have used Photoshop before and the layouts are quite similar.
We started out by tracing some shapes which got more difficult as we went along.  It was a bit tricky at first and can be quite tedious at times but I'm excited to learn more about what it can do and how to use it in my own projects.

I'm planning on starting some sketches for digital drawing sometime this week, and hopefully I can post some of these sketches with next week's post!

Until then...Peace!

Introduction to Introduction of Digital Art

Week One: Introduction to Digital Art

My experience in art has been mainly based around performance art, I love acting and dancing and spent two years prior to coming to Victoria University studying theater art. However I always been passionate about all areas of art (even the ones I'm not good at). Growing up I loved to draw and enjoyed other art subjects such as photography, drama, visual art, painting, etc. I am currently in my final year of the Bachelor of Creative Arts Industries and since coming here to VU I have taken classes such as creative arts in context, life drawing, performance drawing and painting and digital media. I have had some experience with digital art in the past but I am still fairly knew to it and am excited to learn more and improve my skills in this area.

What digital art means to me is art that has been created by drawing, capturing photographs and film and editing them with the use of technology such as computers and digital cameras. It is a modernized form of art

What I am hoping to get from this course is a better understanding and knowledge on how to use different digital art programs and improve my skills in drawing, photography and movie making, also to find new ways of expressing my own art works and hopefully creating some amazing artworks that both the teacher and I are proud of.

Early thoughts on which topic I would like to do is so far is just a blur of different ideas from all the different topics. So I need some time to brainstorm everything and narrow it down to my favourite ideas and work from there.

I'll keep you posted.

Peace out,

Rachel Louise Rendell
